MRF flowchart

How the machine readable format helps a GP and its portfolio companies answer multiple reporting requests: a worked example of one LP request, from the portfolio company to the LP's platform.

Step by step

The example uses fictional organisations: an LP, Sample Capital; a VC fund, ExampleVC; and a portfolio company, H4WK. Each uses a different ESG data platform that has implemented the Invest Europe MRF.

  1. The request

Sample Capital (the LP) requests an Invest Europe report for a fund, ExampleVC, and its portfolio companies.

    • Sample Capital uses the ESG data platform ESGMonitor, which has implemented the Invest Europe MRF.
    • ExampleVC uses the ESG data platform DataCollect, which has also implemented the Invest Europe MRF.

Has ExampleVC already completed an Invest Europe report this year?

    Yes Go to step 4.
    No Continue with step 2.
  2. ExampleVC collects portfolio company data

ExampleVC follows this process for each of its portfolio companies. It uses DataCollect to request Invest Europe portfolio company-level data from one of them, H4WK.

Has H4WK already submitted Invest Europe portfolio company-level data for another VC?

    No
    1. H4WK completes the questionnaire on DataCollect's platform.
    2. Once it is complete, H4WK can download its report as a portfolio-company .csv, so it can quickly complete reporting for other VCs in the future.
    3. ESG reporting is complete for H4WK with regard to ExampleVC.
    Yes
    1. H4WK has already submitted data for another VC on that VC's ESG data platform, ReportEase, which supports the MRF.
    2. H4WK exports its portfolio-company .csv from ReportEase. Alternatively, H4WK may already have saved it when completing the questionnaire.
    3. H4WK imports this .csv into DataCollect and checks the accuracy of the imported data.
    4. ESG reporting is complete for H4WK with regard to ExampleVC.
  3. ExampleVC completes its own metrics

The process repeats until ExampleVC has data in DataCollect for every company in its portfolio. ExampleVC then completes Invest Europe's additional fund-level and GP-level metrics, all in DataCollect.

  4. Export, import and check

    1. ExampleVC exports from DataCollect:
      • the fund-level .csv
      • a portfolio-company .csv for each company in the portfolio
    2. ExampleVC imports these documents into ESGMonitor and checks the accuracy of the imported data. ExampleVC must make sure it has permission to transfer portfolio company data.

ESG reporting is complete for ExampleVC with regard to Sample Capital.

Validate before you import Exporting and importing platforms can check every .csv with this validator before the import step. See also the dispute process for what happens when an import fails.
